Other information
The room is big. High ceilings, big walk in robe. Ceiling fan and well-serviced split aircon. You’ll need your own furniture, but I have dining table and couch – though room for another one’(and thinking of getting a sofabed for the very occasional guest). Modern kitchen with induction stove, Bosch oven and dishwasher. Not so modern but still cute bathroom, shower only. My room is smaller, with no walk in robe, but I have made the tiny bedroom 3 into my media office and recording area. We could work out use of this as a shared workspace if you need, but please be aware I often have to work with recordings and human rights journalism visuals . And the house is full of plants for extra oxygen, with room for more!

Home Description

Description of the home

I just signed a third 12 month lease on a beautiful 104 year old Queenslander cottage in the forest on the ferny fringe of north-west Brisbane until mid October 2025, but now I need a new and awesome housemate in Arana Hills in Magandjin/Brisbane from November 1., for a rolling yearly lease.

The house is 800m across the creek from the train station, and a 3 minute walk from the shopping centre (Coles, Aldi), with the bus stop too. Loads of great cheap restaurants and a cafe in walking distance. The Kedron Brook Bike/floodway is very close, but we are 19 metres above the highest flood line, and well protected from storms.

As much as a rental can be a home, we have a “good” landlord who wants me there as long as I want. Which is great because there is a lovely community around us. The forest garden has to be seen to be believed – it is a little slice of paradise. We do have to do a bit of garden maintenance which would suit someone willing to put some effort in – bushcare style.

About the occupants
I am Nick, an insurgent decolonised investigative, photo and video journalist that works from home or on the street, and often going to do long form stories around the Land. (I report mainly on First Nations, West Papua, Palestine and frontline resistance). I am of Kaurna and Kulin Nations heritage, and 18 other bloodlines from different parts of the colonised world. I live with disability and immunocompromise so I am hoping you will be disability respectful and aware of ableism. I am passionate about the things that matter, but I also know how to connect to the land on which we stand
Compatible people
I am looking for someone who lives as ethically as possible under capitalism allows whilst still working to bring about a better world. I am very community minded, but also value my own space and independence. I am lovingly neurospicy, but not at all a difficult roomie. I enjoy deep yarns, but also am totally respectful of the need for quiet. I believe in a world governed by enthusiastic consent in all things, embodied in the boundary setting of a cat (and having a cat or other clean inside pet (no dogs due to no fences) is approved, but has to be an inside, chipped and desexed cat due to our amazing wildlife – we have a large wire planthouse/ cat run in the backyard, but you will need to make it cat proof and be aware of our resident hawk and eagle).

I am looking for a non-smoking and non-drug using housemate who will be friendly and comradely, but with our own lives and not seeking to be an intimate partner. I am 48, so I would prefer someone between 35 and 55 – but I am open to intergenerational housing for the right person – and I have good uncle energy for my young comrades. Someone that respects and defends all flavours of the humans that respect others. Someone that believes in community care, mutual aid and not throwing people with disability under the bus – so no antivaxxers or conspiracy folks please. Someone that is open to active consent and consensus on daily life interactions. LGBTIQA+ friendly, but someone that doesn’t have a problem with having a partner stay occasionally, with respect to each others needs for peace. Someone who is Actively anti-racist, decolonised (or willing to do the work), and believes in doing the work for positive change.

Someone that has their own life, work and goals, and is able to pay all the shared bills ahead of time – and to NEVER be late with rent (due to the risks in the precarity of housing these days). In past houses we have always built up a few weeks ahead of rent in the house account – just in case of bank or payment failures, emergency or illness.

Most importantly – as its an old house, we need to do equal share of work to keep it clean, and help with the garden maintenance.

For tenancy sustainability reasons, youre Not into substance abuse, & a non-smoker (or v light outside smoker). Someone who respects quiet time, but also is happy to share a meal, a drink, a table and a yarn, and an occasional weekend fire or music out the back with friends.
