Home Description
Description of the home
We have a friendly, communal, permaculture-gardening, picnic-going, sustainably-minded sort of household.
Our home is located in an enchanting, quiet, leafy pocket of North Fitzroy/East Brunswick near CERES and Merri Creek.
The house itself is huge, with classic Italianate design inside and out. The reason it’s fondly called the Vinyl Palace is the spectacular array of linoleum floors throughout that must be seen to be believed.
We have a great setup of garden-beds and fruit trees out back and a pretty front garden with abundantly fruiting citrus and olive trees. We have three sheds out back with space to store stuff.
Our lounge includes *that* impressive feature wall, trusty projector for film nights as well as our regular Sunday dinner and TV night, plus a cosy reading nook.
The kitchen is often filled with the smells of yumminess as we cook, bake and preserve.
We split bills evenly, have unlimited high-speed wifi and source eco-friendly, bulk/unpackaged and local supplies for the palace wherever possible.
We have systems for organising household chores, dishes and other tasks so that things run smoothly, and we prefer a relatively uncluttered house where things have a home.
We have friendly neighbours and a cruisy landlord.
We are a covid-conscientious household (we are fully vaccinated, regularly clean touch-points, ventilate the house, check in about guests, currently prioritise outside hangs, and there is semi-occasional coronacast chatter).
If our ad resonates, email us at thevinylpalacenorthfitzroy@gmail.com - make sure to tell us about yourself and what you are looking for - more is more! If it looks like a potential match, we can arrange either a virtual or in-person cuppa, to show you the house and to see if we all get along 🙂

Housemate 1: I'm a 41 year old bi woman who does many things. I work in sustainability; I'm part of a cohousing group; I'm a Eurovision tragic; I'm usually up to one thing or another, often involving costumes and glitter. I lead a busy and active life and love having a friendly oasis to come home to, but also sometimes need cave time after a long day. I currently work from home. I absolutely adore our neighbourhood and am very fond of taking a twilight stroll and meeting up with my cat-buddies nearby. I like to share meals and cuppas with my house-family, play games, or veg out with some Netflix. I love to bake cakes and I'm responsible for quite a few baking experiments in the house… and I bake special cakes for housemate birthdays! I'm vegetarian and like to cook. I’ve been in the house for nearly 5 years.
Housemate 2:
I’m a 31-year-old straight woman from Aotearoa/New Zealand. I tend to occupy myself with environmental and regenerative things, which leads me down various garden paths (ha). I’m navigating a career transition to this effect and I volunteer at an environmental NFP. I am a lover of: outdoor adventures, slow hangs in the park, hearty chats, yoga and meditation, live music and snowboarding (oh how I’ve missed you!), dancing, plain learning stuffs, and a good glass of wine. A bit of sci-fi and dystopia needn’t go astray. At home I do love a wiped bench and beautiful spaces to unwind in, and I enjoy sharing various kinds of screenings, ‘events’, yummy things and time with the other excellent palace people. I'm vegetarian-ish and currently getting excited about mushroom foraging season
Housemate 3: I'm a 46 year old queer woman from Portland, Oregon. I first came to Melbourne as a fan of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Naturally, I’m fond of detective stories. I also practice meditation, yoga, swimming, and occasionally run the Parkrun. I work from home as a web developer and sometimes study Japanese. I’m an introvert who enjoys people but needs alone time too. I love living with friends and enjoy our social shared meals and movie/tv watching. I’m vegetarian and like to try out baking pizzas and pita bread.
• You’re in your late 20s, 30s or 40s (or are otherwise grown up)
• Looking for (and preferably experienced in) successful communal share-housing (and responsible in house-sharing matters): think cooking and gardening, sharing meals, consensus decision-making, socialising and working on household projects together.
• Interested in sharing food (we get a weekly veggie-box, buy regular groceries together and cook for each other)
• Mostly vegetarian (or willing to eat mostly veg at home) but we currently have no other hard dietary requirements. Preference is for someone with compatible food needs. We eat mainly organic food and try to source local.
• Good at communicating openly and respectfully, and negotiating and compromising in a group situation (we currently get together once every three weeks to eat, meet, and check in about house stuff)
• Queer or queer-friendly, trans* friendly, sex positive, into gender and racial equality, social justice and all those good things that make for a safer and more inclusive society for all
• Into living sustainably (i.e. conscious consumption, aiming toward zero waste, using resources e.g. power/water/food wisely etc)
• Fully vaccinated (or on your way to being so) and willing to prioritise covid safety
• Preferably a non-smoker, though for the right person we can be flexible (but note our lease specifies no smoking on the property)
• Preferably an individual rather than a couple (of course fine if you have a partner who wouldn’t be moving in with you)
• Bonus Points: You enjoy tidy/organised communal spaces, love gardening, preserving garden harvest and/or would like to join in with fun projects and adventures!
